Not just one of the UK’s finest and best-loved actors, renowned for his roles in such films as A Room with a View and Four Weddings and a Funeral, Simon Callow (CBE) has also proved that he is a gifted writer. Here he will be talking about his life on screen and stage, as well as reading excerpts from his latest book, One-Man Band, the third volume of his biography of cinema giant Orson Welles, in which Callow charts the later years of Welles’s life, painting a vivid and often very funny portrait of a troubled genius.
Simon’s earlier books include Being an Actor; Shooting the Actor; highly acclaimed biographies of Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde and Charles Laughton and autobiographical works, Love is Where it Falls and My Life in Pieces, winner of the Sheridan Morley Prize. He also regularly writes for The Guardian.
Simon loves being in front of a live audience: “I’ve found that people are fantastically warm and keenly interested, each talk is entirely different as people react differently to the – though I say it myself – remarkable story I’m telling. I’m fascinated by my fellow human beings and long to know what makes them what they are.”
“Callow’s not simply a terrific actor who happens to write. You could as well call him a terrific writer who happens to act.” – The Times.
