2017 marks the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death. In her short life she wrote not only six of the best-loved novels in the English language, but a wealth of detailed letters – many to her beloved sister, Cassandra – that provide a unique insight into their world.
200 Letters to Jane is a travelling letter writing bureau, commissioned by Time to Read and designed by artist Laura Jamieson, which will tour 22 north west library authorities. Laura invites you to sit down, write a letter and help create a new archive of letters, showing what it is like to live in the North West in 2017, much as Jane’s letters documented the minutiae of life in the early 1800s. Designed to mark the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death, the bureau celebrates the art of letter writing. Everyone who writes a letter will receive a letter in return from another participant. At the end of the project, Laura will curate and design a digital book of 200 selected letters, one for each year of the anniversary, as a homage to Austen’s work.
