Labour politician, Alan Johnson, joins the festival to discuss the third volume of his award-winning memoirs. Following on from his early life recounted in This Boy and Please, Mister Postman, The Long and Winding Road takes us to the corridors of Westminster.
Orphaned at the age of 12 and brought up by his older sister, Alan left school at 15. Here he tells of his early political skirmishes as a trades union leader, where his negotiating skills and charismatic style soon came to the notice of Tony Blair and other senior members of the Labour Party. As a result, Alan was chosen to stand in the constituency of Hull West and Hessle, entering Parliament as an MP after the landslide election victory for Labour in May 1997, from whence he rose through various ministerial positions to the office of Home Secretary in 2009.
Written with characteristic warmth and honesty, The Long and Winding Road takes you into a world which is at once familiar and strange. This is politics as you’ve never seen it before.
